UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model Race Report 5-13-08

Mike Pegher Jr. wins First Lernerville Race in a Late Model!

Sarver, PA (May 14, 2008) Mike Pegher Jr. is no stranger to Sheetz Victory Lane at Lernerville Speedway.  He claimed four features wins en route to the 2007 Advance Auto Parts Pure Stock Track Championship.  The #1 Cochran Late Model he piloted last night is no stranger to Sheetz Victory Lane either.  The familiar #1C Late Model has been to Victory Lane at Lernerville Speedway an astounding 107 times with Lynn Geisler behind the wheel.  Last Night Mike, the #1C Late Model and Lynn were all in Sheetz Victory Lane together after Mike led wire-to-wire in the 20 lap UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model feature.

A stoic but proud Lynn Geisler looked on as Mike Pegher Jr. celebrated his first late model win at Lernerville Speedway with his crew & family, trophy girls and a throng of photographers.  As car owner of the #1 Cochran crate-powered Late Model it had to be a little bit surreal for Lynn Geisler to see the car, (that he will be forever linked to), in Victory Lane with a driver other than himself getting the checkered flag, being interviewed and posing for a seemingly endless number of photographs.

If you have not heard by now, Lynn Geisler is mentoring Mike Pegher Jr. as Pegher makes the leap from the Pure/Street Stock ranks into the Late Model ranks.  In an interview this past Friday Night on Don Gamble’s Trackside Radio Show, (broadcast live every week from the D.J. Johnson/Jason Shank Media Center overlooking the pits and turn four), Lynn discussed the nature of the relationship and how it came about.  To listen to the interview log on to: http://www.trackside.wedo810.com/ and click on May 9 link!

As mentioned above, Pegher led every circuit of the 12-car/20-lap UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model feature.  Starting on the outside of the front row alongside Super Late Model veteran Sammy Stile, Pegher took the lead on the opening lap but two early cautions slowed the early going.  As action resumed, Sammy Stile and Daniel Angelicchio were engaged in a dogfight for second, allowing Pegher to pull away to a comfortable lead.  By lap 13, Pegher was lapping cars and appeared to be headed to Sheetz Victory Lane uncontested.  However, Bryant Hank proved to be tougher to lap than previous cars and Pegher’s patience in getting around him cleanly allowed Angelicchio to reel him in.  As Hank and Pegher approached the flag stand, Angelicchio made one last desperate move through turns three & four, but was unable to beat Pegher to the checkers.

Pegher and Angelicchio were followed across the finish line by Tom Snyder Jr., Carl McKinney and Russ Kolesar.

Three-time Advance Auto Parts Pure Stock Track Champion Butch Lambert, also making the transition to crate late model racing this season, finished in sixth place.  Bryant Hank was the last car on the lead lap, officially scored in seventh.

Rounding out the field of UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Models was Tyler Dietz, Josh Holtgraver, Sammy Stile, Keith Barbara and David Airgood Jr.

Heat races were won by Tom Snyder Jr. and Daniel Angelicchio.
