FCB Clash Local Perspective 5-13-08

Meyers Claims Clash Checkers, Locals have strong showing!

Sarver, PA (May 14, 2008) Jason Meyers is on an absolute tear so far in 2008.  Only Mother Nature has been more dominant on the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Cars Series tour this season.  Of the eight races that have been contest on the Outlaw Circuit, Meyers has won four.

Meyers’ first Outlaws A-Main feature win came at Lernerville Speedway in 2000 during his rookie season on the tour.  He has been trying to return to Victory Lane at the high-banked four-tenths mile ever since that date with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, coming close on a number of occasions. He left no doubt on Tuesday night, as he led the final 18 laps of the First Commonwealth Bank Clash.  Meyers had to hold off the hard-charging “Wild Child” Jac Haudenschild and Terry McCarl, but once Haudenschild jumped the cushion in turns three & four late in the race, Meyers cruised to Sheetz Victory Lane.

Meyers used his eighth Top-10 finish of the season to take a one-point lead in the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship standings over Craig Dollansky.

1992 Lernerville Track champion Dale Blaney led the first nine laps of the A-Main feature, but could not hang with Meyers, McCarl and Haudenschild as the feature progressed.  He did, however, hang in the top five all night and crossed the finish line fourth.  The Hartford, OH native qualified 14th quick, (out of 44 cars), with a lap of 13.063 seconds.  Blaney finished second in both his heat race and in the Crane Cams Dash.

Top Finishing Local Driver Brian Ellenberger comin' right at ya! - Frank Wilson

All Star regular, and so far this season Lernerville regular, Brian Ellenberger turned in the best finish of the local contingent with a 17th place finish in the 26-car A-Main feature field.  The Butler native turned in the 15th quick lap with a time of 13.070 seconds and transferred directly into the A-Main by virtue of his fourth place heat race finish.  As the top local finisher, Brian will receive a certificate from Aluminum Polishing Unlimited for the FREE refurbishing of four racing wheels.

1995 Track Champion Bob Felmlee finished right behind Ellenberger in the A-Main feature with a 18th place finish.  The Seneca native also qualified directly into the A-Main through his heat race where he once again finished right behind Ellenberger in fifth place.  Felmlee turned a lap of 13.104 seconds during time trials, good enough for 19th quick.

1993 Track Champion Tim Shaffer, now an Outlaw regular in the Parsons Motor Sports/Casey General Stores #6, struggled through the 35-lap A-Main feature with a bent and busted up front wing that made the car nearly impossible to handle.  The Aliquippa native soldiered through and turned in a 19th place finish.  He actually had to use an Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws provisional to start the feature after failing to qualify through his heat race or the B-Main.  He missed the transfer position in each race by just one spot after turning the 22nd quick lap of time trials with a time of 13.109 seconds.

Local drivers Brent Matus of Wampum and Carl Bowser of Sarver used Lernerville Track provisionals, based on current point standings, to tag the field for the 35-lap A-Main feature.  Each driver improved for positions to finish 22nd and 24th respectively.

Area driver Mike Lutz, (who won a Commercial Truck & Trailer Sprint feature last season behind the wheel of the Martha Dionise #15), had a roller coaster night in the Chappell #8 sprinter.  The Hermitage native started fast by turning a lap of 12.862 seconds, good enough for 7th quick.  His night took a slight downswing after missing the A-Main transfer position by one spot in his heat race.  But he made the A-Main feature by virtue of his impressive third place run in the B-Main.  However, his night came to an early, melodramatic ending when he pulled off the track on the second lap of the feature.

"The Apollo Rocket" Ed Lynch Jr. - Oyler Action Photo

Another early, melodramatic ending befell Five-Time Track Champion and 2002 Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Winner Ed Lynch Jr.  “The Apollo Rocket” wowed the crowd during time trials clicking off the 2nd fastest lap of the night with a time of 12.828 seconds.  By virtue of his time and by finishing third in his heat race, Lynch qualified for the Crane Cams Dash.  He finished the dash in ninth, which in turn determined his starting position in the A-Main.  But Lynch slowed on the back straight away of the opening lap and pulled into the infield on lap two, abruptly bringing his once promising night to a disappointing end.  Word from the pits is that the 2L either had a problem with the fuel line or with the motor again, as was the case on Friday May 2.

Veteran drivers Rod George, Kevin Schaeffer and Dan Shetler failed to qualify for the A-Main feature through their heat races or C/B-Mains and then declined to opportunity to use a track provisional.  Other Lernerville regulars that competed last night were Charlie Holben, Bill Kiley and Gary & Sheila Rankin.

PA Posse drivers Greg Hodnett and Fred Rahmer made the tow west to participate in the First Commonwealth Bank Clash.  Hodnett finished 15th, Rahmer 16th in the A-Main feature.  Chad Layton also made the tow, but did not qualify from his heat race or the B-Main.

In addition to Dale Blaney and Brian Ellenberger, a handful of O’Reilly All Stars competed last night including PA Posse driver turned All Star Lance Dewease.  Dewease currently leads the All Star Point Standings and turned in a solid 11th place finish.  Greg Wilson and Chad Blond also represented the All Stars Tuesday Night finishing 21st and 25th respectively.  Randy Hannagan did not transfer from the B-Main after winning the C-Main.

Paul McMahan, the regular driver of the famed Ferkel #0 sprinter on the All Star tour, was behind the wheel of the Buch #13.  In his stead, for the night, in the Ferkel #0 was Brandon Wimmer.  McMahan was credited with a 20th place finish; Wimmer piloted the Ferkel #0 to a 14th place finish.  Per Rick Ferkel himself, this was a temporary move and Paul McMahan will continue to drive the car on the All Star Circuit.

The Commercial Truck & Trailer Sprints will be back in action this Friday Night for another Fab Four show on Unwired Inc. and Pittsburgh Circle Track Club Night at the Lernerville Speedway.  For more details log on to Lernerville.com or WorldofOutlaws.com/sprints.
