Apollo Rocket wins fifth of the season, 94th All Time! Miley rockets to third win, Revin’ Kevin wins fourth, Super-sub Schneider takes checkers!
Sarver, PA (August 3, 2008) Despite threatening weather in the forecast, on the radar and in the skies behind the main grandstands, not a drop of rain hit the Action Track Friday Night. When the night was complete, three drivers added to their impressive season stats, while a familiar face made a return to victory lane after a five year layoff. The folks from Flynn Tire were on hand to sponsor the evening and the Central Blood Bank Mobile Unit was on site for the annual blood drive In Memory of Rosalie Bolland and Sandra Winkle.
The Commercial Truck & Trailer Sprints pushed off first tonight with Mike Lutz and Bob Felmlee on the front row, Jack Sodeman Jr. and Rod George on row two, and a suddenly resurgent Ralph Spithaler alongside Scott Priester in row three. Clearly the deck was stacked against the “Ace of Spades” Ed Lynch Jr. who started in the traditional previous winner’s position, 12th. A handful of early cautions, (including false starts by Mike Lutz and Jack Sodeman Jr. which reshuffled the front row twice!), allowed Lynch to pick up a couple spots on each restart. By lap 15, he zipped around Bud Points leader Bob Felmlee in turns one and two to take the lead. Lynch quickly checked out as he darted in and out of lapped traffic in his final tune-up before next weekend’s Knoxville Nationals. The win puts Lynch just six wins shy of the century mark at Lernerville Speedway. A benchmark reached by only Bob Wearing Sr., Lou Blaney and Lynn Geisler.
Bob Felmlee (#6 of Seneca) fought back, but was not able to reel Lynch back in amidst heavy lapped traffic. Felmlee held off a hard-charging Kevin Schaeffer (#9 of Kittanning) for second. Jack Sodeman Jr. (#23Jr of N.Jackson, OH) and Andy McKisson (#0 of Strattanville) rounded out the top five. Dan Shetler, Carl Bowser, Ralph Spithaler, Todd Bauer and Gary Rankin rounded out the CTT Top Ten. Heat races were taken by Jack Sodeman Jr., Ed Lynch Jr. and Ralph Spithaler.
Rod George (#4 of Kittanning) and Scott Priester (#11 of Rimersburg) were running in the top five but went pitside during the feature with a broken rear-end and dropped cylinder respectively. Early leader Mike Lutz (#8 of Mercer) led laps one through five and battled Bob Felmlee for second and third for most of the race, but ran dry of fuel on lap 21. He rolled into the infield to officially be scored 21st.
Jared Miley spent last Friday Night battling the World of Outlaws Late Models at Eldora Speedway. This Friday Night, Miley was back in action and, like Lynch, started from 12th place on the starting grid, (due to last week’s feature winner starting from the tail, more on that below!). Early leader and traditional low groove specialist Ken Schaltenbrand (#29 of Sarver) appeared to be on his way to win number two of the season before blowing the right rear on lap 13. Sam Stile (#2S of Charleroi) inherited the lead on lap 14 but it would be short lived. On lap 15, Jared Miley (#H1 of South Park) passed four cars after rocketing off of turn four, then picked off leader Sam Stile on lap 16. Stile fought back and temporarily retook the lead exiting turn two and down the back straightaway, but Miley once again rung the top cushion and took the lead. Stile took one last run at Miley on the lap 20 restart, but Miley was too fast around the top groove amd he checked out to claim his third Friedman’s Freshmarkets UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model feature of the season.
Sam Stile ran a solid race chasing Schaltenbrand, then Miley, before finally crossing the stripe second. Gregg Satterlee (#22 of Rochester Mills), Alan Dellinger (subbing for the vacationing Mike Blose in the #5) and Keith Barbara (#17 of South Park) dueled for most of the race before rounding out the top five. Spots six through ten went to Gary Lyle, Russell King, John Mollick and Chuck Kennedy. Dellinger, Stile and Miley won their respective heat races.
Reigning Track Champion and current Bud Points leader Alex Ferree (#4 of Saxonburg) blew a motor in his heat, sent the hauler home and brought back the 2007 championship winning car. As such, he had to tail a loaded 26 car field. He made his way to the top ten midrace, but ran into a lapped car on the front straightaway on lap 14. From the tail a second time, Ferree once again made his way towards the front, finishing a very impressive seventh place.
Revin’ Kevin Bolland (#777 of New Brighton) ruined the “win from 12th on the grid” party by capturing his fourth Ferrante Motor Cars DIRTcar Modified feature of 2008. Bolland started fourth, but dove low in turns one & two on the opening lap into second place. He put a textbook slide job on early leader Tim Doran on lap two and never looked back. A late caution on lap 23 allowed 12th place starter and current Budweiser Points leader Brian Swartzlander to restart on Bolland’s rear bumper. But Bolland powered off of turn four on the green flag and cruised into Sheetz Victory Lane for his 41st career feature win. A grateful Kevin Bolland thanked all the fans who gave life by giving blood earlier in the evening In Memory of his mother Rosalie and Ferrante Mod competitor Tom Winkle’s mom Sandy.
Del Rougeux Jr. (#20D of Frenchville) ran a strong race and took a few looks under Bolland but was never able to get past him and raced home second. Brian Swartzlander (#83 of Leechburg) came from 12th and had a chance to race for the lead with two to go, but would cross the line third. Early leader Tim Doran (#12T of New Castle) finished fourth ahead of Jeremiah Shingledecker (#37MD of Polk). Jim Weller Jr., Tom Winkle, J.R. McGinley, Dave Murdick and Mike Turner rounded out the Ferrante Top Ten. Heat race victors were Bolland Swarztlander
Over the past five years, Chris Schneider has made the transition from pure stock driver, to late model driver, then finally to SS Chassis owner. Friday Night, however, Schneider strapped into the Fosnaught #20J and showed that the fire still burns within! Last week, Schneider was called into action after Jim Fosnaught simply could no longer see out of his infected eyes. Schneider jumped behind the wheel after the heat races, meaning he had to tail the field. He raced the whole way to second that night. This week, he started the feature eighth and dove below four cars to take the lead on lap four. Once out front, there was no catching Schneider! A late race caution bunched up the field and allowed Bob Lipinski to restart alongside Schneider. But despite a drag race down the front straightaway that continued down the back straightaway, Schneider retained the lead entering turn three and met a jubilant Fosnaught family and crew in Sheetz Victory Lane. The win was Schneider’s 11th career Lernerville win and his first since the 2003 season.
Bob Lipinski (#55L of Pittsburgh) came close again to his first victory of the season, but for a second time this season had to settle for an impressive second place run. Bob now has eight top ten finishes, but has not yet been able to seal the deal! Bryan Shaffer (#77 of New Castle) ran another strong race to finish third. Shawn Thorn (#12 of Murrysville) raced home fourth. Matt Keith (#15K of Franklin) recorded his best finish of the season with a fifth place run. Sixth through ten went to Pat Hanley, Eric Piotrowski, Greg Beach, Bob Egley and Dave “Brew” Baker, (whose car was sporting a “For Sale” sign Friday Night!). Heat race winners were Wayne Carbo, Bryan Shaffer and Bob Lipinski.
Championship contenders Jason Fosnaught and Wayne Carbo both had to pit during the race with flat tires, and Bob Egley spun out late in the race to keep the Bud Points race tight in the Advance Auto Parts UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks!
We now have just three Fab Four shows remaining as the Budwesier Points wind to a close. Bob Felmlee, Alex Ferree and Brian Swartzlander all retained their points leads this week. Meanwhile, three-time winner Bob Egley assumed the points lead, despite a late race spin. Wayne Carbo and Jason Fosnaught are both within 10 points of Egley in the most hotly contested three-way Budweiser Points race at the Lernerville Speedway. The closest Bud Points race is in the Commercial Truck & Trailer Sprints division where Bob Felmlee picked up one point over two-time defending Track Champion Kevin Schaeffer, but leads by just four points. Alex Ferree maintains a “more than one night” points lead. The most points a driver can accumulate in one night is 40 points. Ferree has a 41 point cushion over the Mike Blose/Alan Dellinger combo in the #5 car. As mentioned above, Dellinger was back behind the wheel this week and nearly claimed his second win of the season. Dellinger’s strong run moved the 5 car ahead of Lynn Geisler’s #1 Cochran ride for second. Kevin Bolland’s win narrowed Brian Swartzlander’s Bud Points lead to just 19.
